Yards, garages and Victorians
Hyde Park is mainly single-family and two-family homes with yards, garages and side doors. Up on Fairmount Hill, many older Victorians still have their original doors.

Plan for distance
Hyde Park is the furthest neighborhood from downtown, so arrival windows can run longer. Save a locksmith's number now and keep a spare key with a neighbor. It's the simplest way to avoid a long wait if you're locked out.
Original doors on Fairmount Hill
Older doors can be thick, heavy and slightly out of square. A good locksmith checks the door hangs true before fitting new hardware, so the new deadbolt throws cleanly for years.

Call to check current availability; the dispatcher gives you a realistic window for your street.
Readville and the reservation
Readville and the streets near the Stony Brook Reservation are quieter and more spread out. Houses there often have long driveways, garages set back from the street and wooded edges. Exterior lighting and solid locks on the less visible doors matter more than in denser parts of the city. Sheds and detached garages, out of sight from the house, should have shrouded padlocks or keyed locks rather than a simple hasp. If you're new to the area, a whole-house rekey on move-in day, keyed alike, gives you one key for every door. Keep a spare in a lockbox or with a neighbor, given the distance from downtown. It's worth adding the garage side door to that rekey list, since it's often forgotten.
